Mapping Resistance: The Young Lords in El Barrio is a public art project exploring the activist history of the Young Lords in East Harlem. This project features the photography of Hiram Maristany, a lifelong resident of East Harlem who was the official photographer of the Young Lords, and a founding member of the New York chapter. From members of the Young Lords in the original storefront office, to the Take-over of the TB-testing truck, to the funeral march for Julio Roldan - all of the photographs featured here were taken on this very block, between 1969-1970. This project commemorates the Young Lords during their 50 year anniversary, reclaiming the history of this neighborhood at a time when widespread gentrification threatens to erase it.
