MAPPING RESISTANCE:
THE YOUNG LORDS IN EL BARRIO

Madison Avenue

(between 111th and 112th Street)

Mapping Resistance: The Young Lords in El Barrio is a public art project exploring the activist history of the Young Lords in East Harlem. This project features the photography of Hiram Maristany, a lifelong resident of East Harlem who was the official photographer of the Young Lords, and an original member of the New York chapter.

In this project, historic images of activist moments return to the streets where the history occurred, 50 years ago - from the original storefront office of the Young Lords, to the Take-over of the TB-testing truck, and the funeral march for Julio Roldán -  all of the photographs featured here were taken on this very block, between 1969-1970. This project commemorates the Young Lords during their 50 year anniversary, celebrating and reclaiming the activist history of East Harlem at a time when widespread gentrification threatens to erase it.
